Skin Prep: Making it a Morning Ritual

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Your makeup only looks as good as the skin underneath”, and I fear that is completely true.

Oftentimes, we forget to prep our canvas before applying makeup. It’s a bit of added time to your routine, but it will make all the difference—I promise!

In this day and age, we are constantly rushing and going through the motions. Checklists to complete, errands to run, people to take care of—then turns our beauty routine into the same rushed feeling. The next time you stand in front of the mirror, I want you to take a moment and breathe before beginning your beauty routine. Remember that this is a moment for you to *enjoy* getting yourself ready. No rushing. No thinking about what’s on the to-do list for the day. We are enhancing your canvas, and this should be a relaxing moment for you amidst any chaos. To make your routine easier, I want to give you a few tips on how you can create a stress-free makeup routine by simply prepping your skin.

Let's chat about how we can make your canvas makeup-ready:

  1. Starting with a freshly cleansed face will give your skincare a better opportunity to soak in and do its job, and your makeup will lay better as well. We want to ensure there is absolutely zero makeup left over from the previous day. That includes makeup in your hairline and on your neck. If you are short on time or just need to refresh your skin, micellar water on a cotton pad works great to remove stubborn makeup.

  2. Use a hydrating toner, moisturizer, and SPF (optional), and allow these products to settle into your skin for at least a few minutes before starting your makeup. I like to take my time massaging my skin care products in—its like a self care ritual for me in the morning!

  3. Hydrate your lips. This is an area that is typically neglected. I love the Laneige Lip Mask for makeup prep, but you can also use something like Aquaphor. If you struggle with your lipstick/lipgloss cracking throughout the day, starting with hydrated lips makes a huge difference.

  4. Pop on some under eye patches. I always feel like a celebrity when I wear a pair of cute eye patches in the morning, even if it's for 10 minutes. If you struggle with puffy eyes in the morning, a pair of refrigerated eye patches really help to lower any swelling.
